What are Vegan Sandals?

First, let’s determine what exactly are vegan sandals.
As with vegan shoes, they’ve come a long way! Gone are the days when the closest thing to cruelty-free kicks were a cheap pair of synthetic leather shoes from the local dollar store. Nowadays there are a lot of brands making high quality vegan sandals, many of which are also eco-friendly.
So, what exactly are vegan sandals? Typically sandals are made with a variety of animal products including leather and other animal skins, wool, and even bone (think glue). What makes modern day vegan sandals and shoes special is that companies are starting to create innovate products that closely mimic the quality, durability, look, and feel of animal skin with plant products like pineapple leaves, apples, mushrooms, and cactus. Additionally, there is no need to use glue containing animal products to create shoes, so that bit is an easy fix.
Also, you might assume all synthetic leather is animal-free, but this is not always the case. Some types of synthetic leather still contain actual leather. So, it’s best to opt for certified vegan leather alternatives when shopping for shoes.
Luckily, there are plenty of options when it comes to brands making beautiful vegan sandals. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorites, and some of the most well known around the world to make your hunt for cruelty-free sandals easier!

Good Guys Don’t Wear Leather – The First Vegan Shoe Brand in France

- Personally Tested – Yes, LOVE these sandals! They are so comfy and I get compliments every time I wear them!
- Totally Vegan Company – Yes, all their shoes are 100% vegan

French. Vegan. Stylish. High quality. Beautiful.
These Jenny Mustard vegan sandals from Good Guys Don’t Wear Leather are nothing short of perfection. The vegan suede is as soft as peach skin, the inner soles are cushiony, and the outer soles are made with a slip-resistant design.
Overall, these slip-on sandals are ultra comfortable. Though the design is wider, even with a super narrow foot like mine, you won’t be slipping out of these shoes unintentionally. Plus, they are perfect for hot summer days when your feet need some breathing room.
Comfort aside, the design is stunning. I’m a big fan of all things mustard. Color or condiment. So these shoes are the perfect addition to my almost entirely black wardrobe.
Additionally, these shoes are made by one of the good guys. Founded back in 2011 this company was the very first vegan shoe company in France. All of their shoes are 100% cruelty and sweatshop-free. All of their lovely shoes are made in Europe (Portugal, Spain, Italy) and are fair-trade. They’re even an eco-friendly company that follows sustainable practices.
Obviously, Good Guys Don’t Wear Leather make a wide variety of styles in addition to these Jenny Mustards. So, it’s an awesome brand to get your next pair of vegan sandals, sneakers, boots, flats, or clogs from!
You can find them at some of my favorite stores in Paris like Manifeste011 and Aujourd’hui Demaine, or in Munich, Barcelona, Lisbon, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Geneva, Leuven, Antwerp, Mortsel, Tel Aviv, NYC, LA, Des Moines, Montreal, or on their website online!

Will’s Vegan Shoes is a carbon neutral, PETA approved vegan shoe company based in the UK. They produce vegan sandals, sneakers, dress shoes, boots, and hiking boots for both men and women. Additionally, they produce high quality bags, clothing, and accessories.
Their vegan sandals come in a variety of styles and types. Whether you are looking for a dress sandal, casual sandal, or activity sandal, they have an option for you. I personally own four pairs of Will’s shoes, including a pair of the Two Strap Sandals they just sent me, and a bag. Every pair is stunning, comfortable, and made to last.
These particular sandals are beautiful! They have padded inner soles that make them comfortable to walk in for hours and if, like me, you value slip resistance, the rubber outsoles are a saving grace.
This one is ideal for people with wider feet as they have hidden elastic strips which allow for extra room and adjustability.
You can even see them in this video. Yes, it’s a tasting video, but I show the sandals at 1:36.
Ahinsa Barefoot Vegan Sandals

AHIMSA
- Personally Tested – No, but I love their philosophy.
- Totally Vegan Company – Yes, all their shoes are 100% vegan
The Ahimsa shoe brand is named after the ancient Indian principal of nonviolence. A fitting name for a vegan brand!
This Brazilian company creates men’s, women’s and unisex shoes including vegan sandals. The company’s mission is a big one – to someday live in a world free of cruelty. They certainly are providing a cruelty-free way to ground yourself with their stunning shoes and vegan sandals! It doesn’t stop there, though.
Not only is Ahimsa making vegan sandals and shoes, they also run the only 100% vegan shoe factory in the world. In fact, most of their shoes are made entirely by hand by a small team of employees in Brazil.
I particularly like these Noemi Black sandals.
Vegetarian Shoes
An oldie but definitely a goodie! Vegetarian Shoes (which are all vegan) has been around for about 30 years…
Like wine, the brand has had plenty of time to develop their styles and selection. Their collection of vegan shoes is massive and you can pretty much find anything you want on their website, including vegan sandals.
While their vegan sandals err on the side of casual, if you’re looking for a if you’re looking for a functional pair at reasonable prices, this is a good option!
Check out the above video for more info about this brand and how it all started!

Matt & Nat
- Personally Tested – No, but I have admired their products many times in shops and have friends who love their products.

From flip-flops to flat sandals, to slip ons and espadrilles, Matt and Nat has a lovely selection of vegan sandals. What I like the most about this brand is their clean, classic designs. So, not matter which pair of vegan sandals you choose, you’re guaranteed to be able to wear them for years to come.
This Montreal based company is 100% vegan and uses materials like recycled plastic bottles, cork, rubber, and PU (polyurethane) and PVC (polyvinylchloride) to create their products. They also make a point to use UP more often than PVC as it’s less harmful for the environment.
Matt and Nat do offer both men’s and women’s styles, however, the men’s sandal selection is a bit sparse, albeit quite nice.
TEVA – Outdoor Sandals

- Personally Tested – Yes, well… I have owned a pair of TEVA sandals before I went vegan and they lasted a hella long time. They were also incredibly comfortable for travel. So, I know the company makes quality products.
- Totally Vegan Company – No, but they have an entirely vegan line of shoes.
TEVA is an US based company that has been around for a loooong time. If you’re looking for function and comfort when it comes to your next pair of sandals, then you’ll want to check them out. They make sandals for everyone including children. So, it’s possibly a one shop stop for the whole family.
TEVA’s sandals are made specifically for outdoor activities and come in a wide variety of styles and colors. Obviously these aren’t the most beautiful shoes around, but if you need a great pair of hiking sandals, or comfy sandals to walk miles upon miles in while exploring a new city in the summer, then this is a great option.
TEVA isn’t a totally vegan company but they do have a huge range of vegan sandals to choose from.
Birkenstock Vegan Sandals

- Personally Tested – No, but this brand has been around forever and I’m happy to promote their vegan line.
- Totally Vegan Company – No, but they have an entirely vegan line of shoes.
There are plenty of jokes and associations with Birkenstock shoes, but the fact is, they’ve been around for a long time! So, there has to be a reason. My guess is that reason is comfort!
The classic Birkenstock sandals are chunky slide-on flats with cork soles. While that style is still alive and well, Birkenstock have done a good job at expanding their designs while retaining some classic features. Now you can find them in a variety of colors and styles. Plus, they have an entirely vegan line to choose from.
NOAH Italian Vegan Shoes

- Personally Tested – No.
- Totally Vegan Company – Yes, all their shoes and other products are 100% vegan
Italy is known for their leather goods, and NOAH is turning that association on its head with vegan leather shoes. They make their adorable women’s sandals from vegan leather composed of polyester fibers, natural rubber, and recycled materials. Everything is produced in Italy where they rely on handcrafting shoe-factories with decades or centuries of knowledge to create their designs.
NOAH has a wide variety of vegan shoes for both men and women, but their sandals are mostly suited for people that want feminine styles.
Lulu’s Shoes
- Personally Tested – No, but this brand has been around forever and I’m happy to promote their vegan line.
- Totally Vegan Company – No, but they have an entirely vegan line of shoes.
I often hear people say that vegan shoes are expensive. That can be true, however, there are plenty of affordable options out there. Lulu’s is one such brand offering a variety of vegan sandals and other shoes at super affordable price points. While I’m not certain about the longevity of this brand’s shoes, if you’re on a budget you might want to take a look.
As far as styles go, Lulu’s women’s vegan sandals are super cute and often pretty sexy. They come in a huge variety to boot!
Dr. Marten

Dr. Marten is another iconic brand with a very specific look. As you may know, they have an entire line of vegan boots on offer, but what you might not know is that they also have vegan sandals.
Obviously you have to be a fan of this style of shoes, but if it’s your thing, check them out!
So there you have it, some of the best brands making vegan sandals on the market. Do you own any vegan sandals? What brands do you love? What did I miss? Let me know in the comments below!

Hello. Just wanted you to know that the last pair of Teva sandals I bought my husband gave him blisters and broke after wearing them about 10 times. They were not at all like the other ones we bought in the past. Teva's warranty is lacking.
