  • My Favorite Dish: The Geisha Roll

I miss sushi. No, what I miss is having access to a variety of sushi options. Most sushi restaurants have avocado and cucumber rolls on the menu, after all. But what they don't have are a variety of creative vegan sushi options with multiple ingredients, and fish substitutes.

As someone who once ate sushi nearly every week, I adore Roots & Rolls in Barcelona because they give me all the things I've been missing. Their menu includes eight creative vegan sushi rolls, and five starters, several snacks, bowls, and desserts.

Roots & Rolls Restaurant Interior

The restaurant itself is airy, modern, and sleek. The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming, and the neighborhood, L'Eixample, is one of the best in Barcelona.

What to Order at Roots & Rolls

So, what should you get at Roots & Rolls? My absolute favorite sushi rolls are the Geisha and the Say Cheese. The Geisha (pictured above) is a crunchy roll filled with avocado maki, quinoa and black rice, and topped with Heüra tartare. Heüra is a brand of the absolute best mock meats on the market, and it just so happens to be a Catalan brand created right here in Barcelona.

The Say Cheese roll has dill cashew cream cheese, asparagus, pickled carrots, shiitake, and black rice. It's divine.

As far as starters and snacks go, I'd recommend the Heüra Karaage. Karaage is a sort of fried savory cake. Theirs are made with Heüra chicken with ginger, soy, and chili flavors that comes with a yuzu miso sauce. Their cauliflower popcorn is also pretty good, though you may need to dip it in soy sauce or ask for salt as I found them to be a little bland.

I'm not going to lie, I've never tried any of their bowls, which includes curry, ramen, pad thai, and bao buns. So, I can't give you any advice there.

Vegan Desserts at Roots & Rolls

If you're in the mood for dessert, I can recommend the cashew citrus cheesecake which is made with a toasted almond crust and red berry coulis and topped with a couple of fresh berries. It's quite refreshing.

The Downside of Roots & Rolls (and How to Solve It)

The only downside to Roots & Rolls is that it's fairly expensive. If you go hungry and want a starter, two rolls, and a dessert you're going to be out roughly 50€ and that's without factoring in drinks. What you can do to ensure you get the most bang for your buck and don't leave broke, is opt for a tasting menu. If you go with at least one other person they will range between 39€ and 59€ per person and include drinks.

Final Thoughts

Roots & Rolls is a must if you're a vegan in Barcelona. You simply can't miss it. I suggest getting any of the rolls as you can't go wrong with them, and if you go with someone else or a group, opt for the tasting menu to save a few Euros.

While the dessert I had was quite good, you could skip it and save your Euros and calories for places with better options. For more on that, check out my guide to the best vegan desserts in Barcelona here.
